According to Genesis 11, the tower of Babylon was a tower constructed by people, the descendants of Noah, united in the intention to reach the heaven. God got enraged by such human arrogance and their negligence of the faith, and therefore destroyed the tower and caused a chaos by confounding their speech and made the builders and constructors speak different languages. After that, they scattered around the world where they settled, while the tower was left as destroyed. With this story, the Bible intended to explain the diversity of languages and races.
