Dutch is a Germanic Indo-European language. It got its name after the Dutch region Holland from whose dialects the standard Dutch language (standard Low German) primarily developed. The close “relative” of Dutch is Afrikaans or Afrikaner language spoken in the South African Republic and Namibia. This language originated mostly from various dialects of Dutch language from the 17th century. Speakers of the Dutch can usually understand and read Afrikaans language. Also, there is a certain number of Creole languages of Dutch origin, mostly in Indonesia and the USA. Dutch is a maternal language for about 24 million people and it therefore – according to various sources – it positions between 37th to 48th place on the world list. Dutch is mostly used in Holland, Belgium and some other former and present Dutch colonies. A variant of Dutch used in Belgium is sometimes called Flemish.
Dutch is the official language in Holland, Belgium, Suriname, Aruba, Curacao, in St. Martin (Sint Maarten, Holland), in the European Union, Benelux countries, and the Union of South-American Nations. It is also spoken in the Netherlands Antilles, French Flandria, South African Republic, etc. It is regulated by the Dutch Language Union, and the script of the Dutch language is Latin (Dutch variant).
