Italian is a Romance language and belongs to the family of Indo-European languages. It is spoken by 70 million of people of which most are the residents of Italy. Standardised Italian language is based on the Florentine dialect. It uses double consonants just like Latin, while accentuation of words is different. Italian language is the 5th in the world by the number of individuals learning it at school (after English, French, Spanish and German).

Italian is the official language in Italy, San Marino as well as in the Swiss cantons of Ticino and Graubünden. Along with Latin, it is the second official language in Vatican, in Slovenia (Koper, Isola, Piran Bay), and in Croatia (Istria). It is also used among the descendants of emigrants in Luxembourg, the USA and in Australia. It has been widely taught in Malta because until 1934 it was one of the official languages.
