Slovenian language belongs to the group of Indo-European languages. The number of speakers using this language is about 2.5 million people, and as such the Slovenian language takes the 178th position in the world. It is a maternal language to about 1 million and 800.000 Slovenians in Slovenia, where it is also the official language. It is also spoken by the Slovenian minorities in Italy (Beneška Slovenija/Slavia Veneta, Trieste, Rezia, Gorica), Austria (in Carinthia and in Styria), Croatia and Hungary. The number of Slovenian emigrants in the USA, Western Europe and Austria is estimated to about 400.000. The orthography is Slovenian Latin.
