Turkish belongs to the family of Arabic languages. The number of speakers communicating in Turkish language whether it their maternal language or not is estimated to between 70-80 million people. Turkish is a maternal language for about 80% of the Turkish population, while the rest speak Kurdish language. (Linguistic minorities in Turkey are bilingual and also speak Turkish language). Therefore, Turkish positions itself as the 23rd language on the world list of languages. Turkish is the official language in: Turkey and in Cyprus. As a minority language it is recognised in: The Republic of Macedonia, Serbia, Romania, Iraq (Kirkuk). There is also a large number of Turkish language speakers in Bulgaria, Greece, Germany, Iran, Syria, Austria, Belgium, Holland, Switzerland, Azerbaijan, etc. It is regulated by the Institute for Turkish Language. This Turkish language association was founded in 1932. As of 1983 this society was put under the control of the state Prime Minister. Turkish orthography is a modified Latin script.
